Garden Designs For A Secret Garden in Rochdale

Rochdale, Greater Manchester

If ever proof was needed that a small suburban garden at the back of a new build house does not necessarily mean dull and boring this is a good example of what can be achieved. On first sight the space was little more than a slope of earth and an odd shape to boot. The client’s, keen gardeners, and gave me a copy of a picture they had purchased of the tropical garden greenhouse in Kew gardens. My design challenge was to create layers of interest within what is a tiny space though the use of clever level changes and raised render planters. Paths running across the garden also creates a sense of depth and space. I designed the metal climbing frames to further divide and screen off parts of the garden to achieve a sense of journey. A steel frame gate with inset timber lats was designed to give privacy, create an air of expectation, as well as adding a contemporary twist. Lime green pots were included to add a touch of zing. Again, just because a garden is located in the North West of UK at high altitude does not mean the planting needs to be conventional either. The garden as seen in the gallery before and after pictures was planted up only a year ago and already is starting to achieve the desired effect.
